Fun Facts Friday: Deer Antlers

Fun Facts Friday: Deer Antlers

Out of the entire deer family, including caribou, reindeer and moose, only the males normally have antlers, with the exception of reindeer. However, when one sees a deer with no antlers, it is not an automatic sign that it is a female, as the males shed their antlers each year during the winter months.

Did you know that deer antlers, after falling off, provide a rich food source for many forest dwelling animals like rabbits, squirrels or porcupines? They use it as a rich source of calcium and many other nutrients.

Makes one think, how nature finds a use for everything and lets nothing go to waste. Our habits on the other hand in today’s society display a very wasteful human nature.

May we become more conscious of the waste we create, and move towards more sustainable habits, where we are re-using more and throwing away less.

I read a book about the gold rush in the Yukon once and they described how they used to boil down the antlers to produce a type of butter.
