Fun Facts: Tree Bark

Fun Facts: Tree Bark

The bark of a tree comes in all sorts of colors, textures and patterns. It offers a special protection to plants that have them (mostly trees), against damage, water loss, diseases, predators, extreme temperature changes, etc.

Did you know that the thickness of bark varies from less than an inch, up to a couple feet thick! The thickness depends on the type of tree, its habitat and its needs.

It makes one think about the different layers of protection that we each build around ourselves. Depending on our childhood, our environment, our experiences, we each protect ourselves in different ways. And while a certain layer of protection may be very beneficial for most of us, too many of us build up layers around ourselves that limit us from fully expressing ourselves, feeling life and living.

May your “bark” never grow too thick that you forget how to fully live and feel the richness of all life.

  1. Evita, this is absolutely gorgeous! Wow. I’ve never seen bark like this. I had no idea bark could grow up to a couple of feet thick, either. You’re right; some of us do build up thick layers around us that prevents us from living. Kinds of stifles us.

  2. Marcie says:

What exquisite textured detail. What a great eye..and wonderful idea!!!

  3. I have a fascination with the trunks of trees. I often marvel at the exquisite patterns in the bark, intricate like filigree work. The old trees are the most beautiful, so rugged and rough. But with human beings, as you say, too thick a wall of protection between us and the world, deprives us of much love and joy.
